Brazilian Healer John of God Honoured by Catholic Church

The Catholic Church has bestowed a high honour on John of God, a man who has facilitated more miracle healing than all of the Saints combined together.

In November 2012, Joao Teixeira de Faria, known to millions simply as John of God, was presented with a degree signed by Cardinal Bertone, the secretary of Vatican-State at that time, that honours John of God as a Knight-Commander of the Order of St Gregory.

This honour is bestowed upon Roman Catholic men and women (and sometimes in rare cases to non-Catholics) in recognition of their personal service to the Holy See and to the Roman Catholic Church, through their unusual labors, their support of the Holy See, and their excellent examples set forth in their communities and their countries.

The bestowal of this degree is a wonderful recognition by the Catholic Church of the philanthropic work that John of God has performed (and continues to perform) over the past 50+ years, a man who during this time has certainly facilitated more miracle healing than all of the Saints combined together.

John of God is the greatest living representative of the Spiritism tradition, in the country that has the greatest number of practitioners, Brazil. A public survey to find the most popular Brazilian person identified the Spiritist Medium Chico Xavier (1910-2002) as No. 1, even before national heroes like Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna.

John of God considers Chico Xavier his mentor and guide that brought him to establish his healing clinic, Casa de Dom Inacio de Loyola in Abadiania Brazil. And it was his beloved Chico Xavier who gave Joao Teixeira de Faria his nickname “Joao de Deus”, in English “John of God”.

In Brazil where more people are going to church and where churches of all sizes are full even during the week, Spiritism, by most, is not considered a replacement for religion but an addition.

Also, John of God leaves no doubt about his primary allegiance to the Catholic tradition and in particular that of the Jesuits, as he named his clinic after Ignatius de Loyola the founder of the Jesuits whom he considers his guide and the symbol of the Jesuits and their motto “Ad maiorem Dei gloriam” translated as “For the greater glory of God” is written above his chair, at his healing sanctuary, Casa de Dom Inacio Loyola in rural Brazil.

This move by the Catholic Church that is perfectly formulated by Cardinal Angelo Sodano connects our times with the tradition in which Jesus was spreading his word through the healing miracles that he performed.

Cardinal Sodano states that sickness is not in the first line a malfunctioning of the body but one of the most important moments in a person’s life to reconnect to the source and purpose of his life. Therefore, it is so fitting that a man, Joao De Deus [John of God] who is such a gifted facilitator ofr this process of spiritual change is being honoured in this way.

John of God has worked for over 50 years to create an environment for this process, in which one feels the intensity of early Christianity, its emotional dedication, the lack of form, its unpredictability in any moment, the openness for accepting what every volunteer can add to the whole. Nowhere else do you hear the Lord’s Prayer and the Ave Maria repeated more often, alternating with ad hoc testimonials or expressions of gratefulness and the pure joy of so many that have been healed and received a new direction in their lives.
